Can you guarantee that there will be no hidden car rental costs?

Yes. All our car rental rates include GST (New Zealand sales tax), unlimited kilometres, and insurance with a low excess of $2000. All extra items required such as snow chains and car seats are available at a small extra charge.

Do you offer one-way car rentals?

Yes. One-way hires are possible and can be arranged between any of our branch locations, subject to availability and relocation fees.

Can I use my overseas drivers licence?

Yes. However, if your drivers licence is not printed in English you will need to arrange for an International Drivers Licence or call to discuss with us. You must be over 21 years of age to hire a rental car in New Zealand.

What happens if I return my car rental early?

If you return you vehicle earlier than expected then no refund is applicable.

Do I have to pay a deposit? and what happens if I want to cancel my booking?

Your hire is paid for in full at the time of booking through our online booking engine and the cancellation fees apply below:

  • No cancellation fee applies for cancellations made more than 48 hours prior to the scheduled start of the hire.
  • A 1 day hire cancellation fee applies for cancellations made between inside 48 hours to the scheduled start of the rental.

What kind of drivers licence do I need to hire with The Rental Car Company?

In order to drive one of our rental cars you need to have a full licence that is printed with English characters. If the licence is not in English characters then you will need to supply a translated licence or call us to discuss.

Do you charge a bond?

No. We do not charge a bond provided the hire is secured or paid for by credit card. If you are unable to supply a credit card a bond of up to $2000 may be required at the start of your hire. This bond can be paid by cash, eftpos or debit card.

Do you charge for additional drivers?

Yes. Additional drivers are charged at $8.00 hire.

Can I pay for the car rental by credit card?

Yes. We accept Visa and Mastercard.

What is the cost of insurance?

We recommend Cover-more Insurance. Speak to our staff when you pick up your vehicle and we can issue your policy onsite.

Do you offer after-hour car rental pickups and drop-offs?

Yes, subject to prior arrangement and agreement. For after-hour pickups, we requires the Customer Rental Agreement to be signed and pre-paid in full at least 24 hours prior to pickup. The after-hours fee is $35.00 forhires that fall outside of our office hours of 8am-5pm Mon-Sun
